Four Christmases: Christmas #2

The Williams/Freeman, Davie/Gooch, Hamlin/Aldrich Christmas Party

For nearly 30 years we've continued on this tradition of having an annual Christmas party with all these families. Our families are growing at a rapid rate, it seems, but that doesn't stop us!

I loved it this year because Harper was really able to "join in on the party." Last year she was just a few weeks old. Look at this sweet little curly headed angel. I love her to pieces.

I love seeing all the kids together. It's crazy that Nicole, Jenna and myself all have babies of our own. They are growing up and pretty soon, will find out just how special this party really is. There's a lot of tradition and fellowship that comes along with this party.

So angelic, Audrey!

A tradition Nicole, Jenna and I started last year was getting the kids matching Christmas pj's and after we ate, and before presents, putting them in their pj's. I love this!

Harper and I had to get our annual "cheek to cheek" picture taken together! Love, love, love her!!

It was so sweet to capture this. Right behind Austin is Jenna's senior picture. Since Austin was holding him, Drake was right on eye level with the picture. He pointed to it, with the biggest smile on his face and said, "Mama!" Love this little guy!

Here is the kids in their pj's. I did a side by side comparison just to see how much they've grown since last year. It's amazing! I also love that last year, none of them were smiling. They looked like miniature Ebeneezer Scrooges! Little Harper wasn't even in the picture last year...she was too tiny!

The kids had so much fun playing together and I loved lining them up in their pj's and taking their picture. The next few pictures show the hilarious series of events between Drake and AB. Cracks. Me. Up.

AB has no idea what's coming to her!

Booty in the face!

She's so over it, now!

Their expressions here are PRICELESS!

Sweet kisses from Harper!

Baby booties!

We couldn't forget to take pictures with Mimi, Bebe and Nana!

And pictures with the Mommies!

Don't forget about Landree! Everyone had their hand on my belly, welcoming our newest member to the families!

There was no mistletoe, but the night ended with a kiss!

Don't take it personal, Drake. She wipes off every one's kisses!

Really, Drake. I promise. She does it with everyone, don't be so surprised!

Until next year...Merry Christmas to your family, from ALL of ours!

Four Christmases - Aldrich Family Style: Christmas #1

The Hamlin Family Christmas

Yes, we really did have a season of Four Christmases. No, not all in one day or weekend and not all nearly as dysfunctional as the movie, but we did have a month full of four different Christmas celebrations.

The first Christmas was with my Dad's side of the family: my cousins, aunt and grandmother. As a child, Christmas with this side of the family was the most memorable. Every Christmas morning after opening presents and seeing what Santa brought, we would head over to my cousin's house for Christmas day. My cousin and I would open our gifts and then spend the rest of the day in her room playing and comparing with what we got. So. Much. Fun.

I regret that Christmas day isn't spent with my cousins anymore. Since we're all married and our spouses have families, too, we now have to designate a Saturday to do our Christmas. I can't complain. I still feel like a kid when we're all together.

Unfortunately, my lazy, pregnant butt didn't move from the one spot where I was sitting and opening my gifts. So, the pictures are limited to what was in my line of vision...yes, most of that being my child.

This Christmas AB really got it down with the present opening. She was ready to rip into those gifts and see what was inside. I enjoyed her opening gifts more than myself opening this year, I think!

Carter - the oldest of the second cousins. He's a pro at this present opening thing!

My cousin, Amanda, got her, her very own baby bed. I was so pleased with it! She found it in Canton and her husband painted it for AB. I love, love, love it - I think it was a hit with AB, too!

We were dogsitting this weekend, and I couldn't resist putting Piper in it. She was just the right size!

Oh, every once and a while you get a smile out of Bubba! There's one...due to the really cool hat he's wearing (sarcasm!).

Love the pictures of sweet Stetson and Austin. They were buddies this year. I think it made Austin's day.

Yeah, by the end of this first Christmas celebration, we were all pretty worn out! Look out! There's much more to come!

Decorating the Tree, Plus a New Tradition

As we got the tree, ornaments and all the Christmas decorations down to begin decorating our tree, we were interrupted by a knock at the door!

So, we run down the hallway to see who could be at our door on this random evening. There he was, our sweet new friend and elf, Ralphie.

Wow! An elf of our very own! And would you know, that elf was dropped off on our doorstep (we're thinking by Santa) with a book about his time with us! He was our very own Elf on the Shelf. How exciting! We immediately put the tree decorating aside and sat down and started reading the book! Annabelle was so excited to have that sweet Elf in our home.

Of course we had to give it a name, and as you already heard we named him Ralphie. Daddy helped with the name giving, a little bit. We told Annabelle that Ralphie would have to be in places where he could see everything, so that meant up high. We also explained how Ralphie needed his magic to fly to the north pole every night to tell Santa if she was being naughty or nice. So, we wouldn't be able to touch Ralphie anymore after this evening.

To help with the temptation of wanting to play, squeeze, and love on Ralphie, Daddy thought it would be a good idea to put him high up in the tree so that he could watch us decorate it. Good idea, Daddy.

After we read the book and put Ralphie in his place for the night, it was bath time and then time to decorate the tree!!!

This was a very enjoyable tree decorating time this year. Annabelle was able to actually put the ornaments on and decide where she wanted them to go. She took joy in most of the ornaments, and really loved Daddy's Superman ornament, whom she says looks just like Daddy. I would have to agree with you, AB. After all, Daddy is Mommy's Superman.

She knew exactly where she wanted those ornaments to go. You might be able to tell the ornaments she hung up...

Yes, it was very hard for the control freak Momma to let those ornaments all stay in that one bunch. Some branches had 2-3 ornaments on one. I loved it, though. How sweet that she had her own special way of doing it.

I have to admit, I did do a little bit of "rearranging" here and there over the next couple of days. What? I like things to be proportional!!

After the tree was all decorated, I snapped this picture of AB who had plopped herself down on one of the ornament tubs and was watching Home Alone. It was so priceless. This was me as a child. I loved Christmas, Christmas movies and decorating the tree.

Here's to a fun Christmas season and remembering the real reason for the season. It's not about Santa, elves, trees or toys. It's about the birth of our Lord and Savior. Now that's the greatest gift of all!

20 Weeks

Let me just preface this by saying, I'm extremely disappointed in myself in the lack of effort I've put into blogging about this pregnancy. I know, I know...people say that everything is totally different with your second one: you don't take as many pictures, video or document as much, but I didn't want to be that way. I wanted it to be equal for all my children. *Sigh* Oh, well. I guess I'm doing the best I can.

A little background on this pregnancy, thus far. I was sick and tired as a dog up until about 16 weeks. The nausea finally subsided, and the fatigue quickly followed. I was so thankful. I didn't even feel like a human being, and having a two year old, there wasn't a whole lot of resting going on. I can't complain, though. AB is very good and understood when Mommy needed to rest, but it isn't the same as coming home and just falling asleep with no worries before you have that first one. I was sick about 2-3 out of the five mornings of the week. I would feel a little better around lunch, and the nausea would start up again at night. I barely ate anything because NOTHING sounded good. Even when I did eat, my portion sizes were super small. I just didn't have an appetite.

I found out very early on that I had developed hyper-thyroidism. This means my thyroid is over active and it caused me to not gain weight. I wasn't losing, necessarily, just not gaining. In fact, I went in at the very beginning weighing about 135. Four weeks later I was down to 127, my pre-baby weight. Who knew?!? All I had to do was get pregnant a second time to get down to my pre-baby weight?? Sheesh!

Good news, though. My last visit, I went in and was back up to 135 and my blood showed that my thyroid was improving a little bit. I still went to see an endocrinologist, at the recommendation of my OB. He, just like my OB, was very thorough. Wants to see me again at 28 weeks and then if my symptoms are still pretty mild, as they are now, then he wants to do a post-baby visit at six weeks. Hyperthyroid could be something I deal with my whole life, but that's why I'm seeing the endocrinologist to determine if that is so, or not.

Landree is extremely active and I feel her on a regular basis. This is a blessing and a curse. The times I don't feel her, I start to worry a little bit. I can't seem to completely chill out after the miscarriage. I will say though, that this is a very, very prayed for baby and we have faith in our mighty God that He will bring her to us healthy and safe...and full term! However, if she doesn't want to be quite as full term as her sister, I would be ok with that, too.

This pregnancy has been a little different and presented challenges that we didn't have with Annabelle. At my first high-level ultrasound appointment, at 12 weeks, we had a wonderful sono and the doctor even predicted a girl. These sonograms are done for screenings for down syndrome. He said everything looked fine, but I would have a second sonogram at 17 weeks to make sure everything still looked good. We did go on ahead and opt to do blood work for funky genetic disorders. None of this in which we chose to do with Annabelle...down syndrome screening, genetic tests, etc... I was really caught off guard when the doctor called me a couple of weeks later telling me that my blood work showed I had a slight risk of downs syndrome. The odds were about 3%, but it didn't really matter to me - there was still a chance. I've talked to many, many people who have had the same results come back in their blood work. All of which don't have children with downs syndrome. Like my dad said to me, "You do realize that is a 97% chance that you don't have a baby with downs syndrome, right?" I know this, but being the mom, all I can focus on is the 3%. Austin and I have done a lot of praying, as well as good friends and family who have prayed with us also. I am thankful for them.

We went back to the doctor at 17 weeks to confirm the gender and see if the doctor detected anything on the sono that would be indicative of downs syndrome. The sonogram came back perfect. I wanted to be 100% encouraged, but the doctor, being the doctor, had to remind me that even though it was a good thing, 50% of all sonos with downs syndrome babies show normal at this stage. *Sigh* Well, Austin and I have just come to have a peace about it. We absolutely opted to NOT do the amnio, because that would mean that a very large needle would be placed inside my womb to determine whether or not the baby had downs syndrome. The risk of miscarriage is 1 in 200. No thanks. I don't want to know that bad. The chances of our baby having downs syndrome doesn't change how much we will love her. We just pray God's guidance, wisdom and protection during this time.

I can't lie, a flood of emotions, thoughts and feelings have been upon me since we found out there was "a risk." I don't feel like a baby with downs syndrome should be such a bad thing. I hate. Hate, hate, hate, people's facial expression when we tell them that our baby has a slight chance of having downs syndrome. It's almost like a, "Oh, how terrible for you." look. Why? Why would it be so terrible? I completely understand the changes and challenges that a downs syndrome baby would bring, but it's still our baby. It's still a human being. Why should that be devastating? I would feel privileged to be the mother of a child with a disorder such as that one. I was chosen by God. For whatever reason, I would be chosen.

However, at the same time, I just want a healthy baby that I don't have to consider all the changes and challenges, but if that is God's plan, I will gladly accept it.

Any and all prayers would be appreciated for us and our sweet Landree. God has great things in store. I feel it.

As far as my monthly belly pics that I was so devoted to and diligent about when I was pregnant with AB, they haven't been as much with Landree. At eight weeks, I was just too paranoid to take one. I took an 8 week picture with our last baby, and then a week later I lost him/her. So, I just avoided that one altogether. At twelve weeks, I was just plain sick. I didn't want to even walk into the other room to take a picture, I just wanted to go to bed. I don't have an excuse for week 16, except pure laziness. So, I forced myself to get up and get moving with my 20 week belly pic. I'm taking an oath to myself to be devoted to them from here on out.

So, here's week 20. Excuse the rest of me. Night time is still a bit of struggle for me - I'm tired!!

Spelling Change for Baby #2

Yes, I have to say that we had to make a decision about miss Landry's, Landree's name. That's right. We've changed the spelling to Landree. This has been my favorite spelling all along, but Austin preferred to keep it Landry. After some discussion, Christmas cards went out and two presents later with Landry's name spelled with a, "y", we made the difficult decision to go with the spelling Landree.

Thanks to all friends and family who have already made things for her and spelled the other way, but have been very understanding. So, here it is:

Landree Claire Aldrich

Officially, in writing, there it is!

Happy Thanksgiving 2011

Oh, how I love Thanksgiving! Of course I love getting the family over and spending quality time with everyone, but one of the biggest reasons is this guy right here.

My husband can cook a turkey like no one's business and it is goo-ood! He smothers it in sage butter and maple syrup, topped with hickory smoked bacon. Oh my word. It's the best! I love waking up on Thanksgiving morning, turning on the parade and Austin's busy working on the turkey.

And of course, a Thanksgiving breakfast tradition...cinnamon rolls!

This year was particularly fun because Annabelle really got into the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. She was fascinated by all the big "balloons" and she even caught a glimpse of her favorite four - The Fresh Beat Band! It was even more special because my good friend, Krista, was at the parade this year and took video of the Fresh Beat Band as they rolled by her. So, we had VIP live footage of the Fresh Beat Band at the Macy's Day parade!

Austin was hard at work on his masterpiece. I love this guy and the time he puts into making the turkey!

We had to do a Thanksgiving "I am thankful" craft. AB colored a turkey and we talked about the people we were thankful for and wrote them on the feathers of the turkey. Unfortunately, we only had about five feathers and A LOT of people we're thankful for...so we had to pick and choose.

Unfortunately, the pictures stop here. I forgot to bust out my camera once family arrived. So, this Thanksgiving, the memories captured are of our sweet family of three (for now!) and how we spent our Thanksgiving morning. It's surreal and crazy to think that next Thanksgiving, we'll be a family of four! I can't wait!
